The evolution of our very successful Grassroots amateur development program, Kona’s Super Grassroots Team represents a collection of some of the best and brightest of both up-and-coming, and established cyclists from around the world. In disciplines ranging from Enduro to Downhill, Freeride, XC and Cyclocross, Super Grassroots riders are both established legends of the sport, like longtime Kona rider Wendy Simms, and soon-to-be-pros like Nathan St. Clair and Layton Meyers. Stay tuned to the Cog for their race results, associated media and ride adventures throughout the year.

Caleb Holonko

The young Canadian that simply loves riding and building, Caleb is hard at work in the forests of BC, constantly pushing his riding no matter the terrain or discipline. With build projects always on the go there are going to be some great web videos this coming season. Caleb plans to travel, create and compete this year with no intent on slowing down.

James Rennie

Born and raised down under in New Zealand, but now residing in Vancouver, James returns to the Super Grassroots team for his second year. After competing in both local and international enduro events in 2016, James plans to do more of the same in 2017 while also trying to tick off as many “must do” BC rides as possible. Look for him on the North Shore most days after work or at an enduro event near you aboard his Process 153DL.

Katie Button

Katie grew up in Ontario, spending most of her time chasing alpine ski racing dreams. She moved on to becoming a physiotherapist, and starting a triathlon habit along the way. In 2012 she moved to Victoria, BC to better her XTERRA career and really discovered what mountain bike and triathlon racing is all about. These days you can find her at most off-road triathlon and XC events around Canada. She is now working as a physiotherapist and living the dream in Sechelt, BC.

Wendy Simms

Wendy Simms started racing BMX bikes as a kid long before it was an Olympic sport. After an extended racing hiatus, she moved to British Columbia and discovered mountain biking on the infamous North Shore mountains. She was hooked. Over the past 19 years her love of off road bike racing has sampled XC, DH, adventure racing, cyclocross, XTERRA, and multi-day stage events all over the world. She is the 5x Canadian National Cyclocross champion and has won many prestigious events such as the BC Bike Race, Trans Rockies and the Test of Metal, all aboard the best bikes Kona has to offer. Her overall enduro wins in BC Bike Race and Singletrack 6 has her “enduro-curious”. On the side, she has helped her husband, Norm Thibault, create Cross on the Rock, now the largest cyclocross series in Canada. With two young kids, a full-time career and half way through her doctorate degree, she races closer to home these days. Luckily BC has a huge selection of competitive mountain bike events to choose from.
