RYAN TREBON WINS IN BOULDER-WICKS 2ND PLACE
Kona-yourkey.com Factory Team Rider Ryan Trebon quelled the uprising and put the strong stamp of victory on the weekend races in Colorado. The entire team performed very well with Trebon notching two victories, Wicks a 2nd place and Erik Tonkin clawed back into the top ten placing. It was a good weekend for the team and a great way to motivate for the next round of the US Gran Prix Races.
Day One-Redline Cup:
With UCI Category 1 points on the line and a search for a bit of vindication the Kona-yourkey.com team set out with at plan to get some wins this weekend. Trebon was set on hammering on the field but had a bit of a slow start so teammate Barry Wicks charged off from the gun. He was riding well leading the group and feeling strong when he crashed hard in a gravely corner. “I got a bit banged up on that one for sure. The adrenaline kept me going well for the rest of the race but it did kind of get to me the next day,” said Wicks.
After the crash Trebon accelerated to the front group hit the gas and rolled right on through. Teammate Barry Wicks was the only one the could attach onto Trebon’s attack but only for long enough for him to distance himself from the rest of the field. Trebon and Wicks rode the rest of the race solo for 1st and 2nd place. Erik Tonkin returned to his old self. Frustrated with his performances from past weeks Tonkin wanted to put in some good rides. That he did with a big field and at altitude he put in his best finish of the season at 9th place.
Day Two-Boulder Cup:
Set on the same course as a US Gran Prix of last year which was held in a city park in Boulder, anticipation was high. Last year’s event was one of the best of the cross season both in organization and fan turnout. This year was much the same but with the reverse finish order of last year for the Kona team and without the mechanical mishaps.
Trebon received some treatment over the past week for his ailing left leg and hip which seemed to pay dividends. He wanted to test the leg from the start of the race, went to the front and controlled the pace for the first lap. Then he blew off the front like the strong Fall winds of the day and was not to be seen by the rest of the field till the podium. “I’m still not 100% and I have a few issues when I go full out for more than a few minutes. But I’m felling much better. It’s good to get some wins for sure and with a bit more treatment I’ll be getting stronger as the weeks go on,” said Trebon.
Meanwhile in the chase group Wicks was getting worked over by the cyclocrossworld.com duo of Jeremy Powers and Tim Johnson. “I burned some matches yesterday keeping 2nd place and I’m pretty stiff from the crash and I don’t always recover real well at altitude. I just didn’t have the legs all the way today, those guys rode a good race,” said Wicks. Wicks would finish out 4th on the Day. Erik Tonkin not satisfied with his 9th place finish of the day before kept the hammer down through the race picking through the field. He rode a great tactical race and worked his way up to finish in 7th place.
Note: Kona-yourkey.com rider Wendy Simms was not able to compete due to a virus.
All in all another good weekend for the Kona-yourkey.com team.
