DH, 4X World Cup Round 1 - Vigo

DH Report
Sunday morning in Vigo and all is good until the rain starts…..
Tracy was already at the top getting ready for her race Run and the heavens opened down in the pits, surprisingly it did not rain at the top of the track but it cast doubt into the mens field on tyre choice.

Tracy had an early start due to her poor qualification result, she was really focussed and prepared for a good run. She had an amazing top section through some technical steep rocky sections and managed to maintain a good flow all the way down the track. She really pushed hard for the finish pedalling all the way to the line and took the hot seat! Tracy managed to hold on to the lead as the rest of the top girls tried to beat her time, Sabrina Joinnier was closest to her time but not close enough! This victory gives Tracy the leaders Jersey going into Fort William.

Fabien qualified 3rd fastest so was one of the last riders down the track. He looked to be very focussed on the start and had made the right tyre choice! He was really motivated for an early season victory and pushed hard from the start, he passed through the upper technical parts of the track with ease and hit all his lines with precision and speed. He passed the split with the fastest time and the crowd was going crazy it looked like he was ready for the win. In last third of the track he caught the edge of a tree stump with his front wheel and flew over the bars, he got back on and rode to a 14th place finish to get valuable points. He was very disappointed with his crash but is confident for the rest of the season as he was riding really well and has a good fitness level. Mick Hannah took first place with an awesome ride.

4X Report

The qualification took place on Friday afternoon in front of a large crowd, the track was dry and pretty loose with some flat turns and big jumps.
Kamil did not have a great qualification and ended up 14th after a few small mistakes. The time were very close with 20 riders all on the same second. Prokop was fastest.
Today, Saturday saw the start of the race with a strong field of 64 and an enormous crowd..
Kamil had some tough rounds and worked his way through the rounds knocking out, some big names like Tamme, Rennie and Graves. Due to his bad qualifying he needed to constantly look for options to pass to keep in the top 2 of each round.

He progressed to the final and had one of his best gates of the night managing to pull into second behind Prokop, however he lost his rhythm on the first set of jumps when the riders came together and dropped back to 4th, he managed to pull back to third after the first turn and remained there to the finish.
Kamil was really happy with his ride to 3rd place at the season opener on his new Kona Cowan.

Tracy Moseley Report

After the race at San Remo, my plans of a good recovery and preparation did not go according to plan. I had 2 trips to the doctor and ended up on antibiotics as I seemed to have some underlying throat infection or virus which was just taking all my energy. I tried to go to the gym twice and on both occasions I had to stop as I was exhausted and not recovering. My throat was so sore it felt like I had cut it ! Anyway after 5 days of antibiotics it seemed to have cleared up and I left straight for Vigo having done pretty much nothing for an entire week ! Not ideal preparation !

A few things played in my favour as this year they have changed the practice schedule at world cups, separating the top 80 men and 30 women to have their own practice session. This meant a much reduced amount of time for practice which I think was a good thing for me as I was still pretty tired. They also changed our qualifier and held it on the Saturday, so that the finals on Sunday would finish early so that all the Spanish spectators would be able to get home to watch the Formula 1 in the afternoon !! Again this enabled me to recover from my qualifying before the final.

The weather was also good all week with a few over night showers and some morning mist. The dryness was eating away at the track, with lines getting blown away all the time. I was really enjoying practice I felt good right from the start. I worked on my suspension quite a bit with the help of Paul my mechanic and mainly with Gary Peyer from Fox, who did a great job getting it set up for this track. I think it must have been working well as everyone was complaining that the track was really rough, and I really didn’t think it was ?!!

My qualifying run was going ok until I hit something with from front wheel in a soft corner and the next thing I knew I was on the floor. It was on quite a flat section of the track so it took some time to regain my speed. I rode the rest of the track ok and managed to finish in 8th spot for some valuable points. With this crash I was only 7 secs back so I knew that I had the speed, I just needed stay on and I would hopefully have a good result.

I don’t know what it is about the weather, but it seems to know when the finals are and always starts to rain ! About 30 mins before my start I was at the top warming up and the heavens opened! It was only a really short 10 mins of rain and luckily the sun followed and by the time the racing began it was pretty much dry again. It did not really affect the track although it made the rock slabs and the wood section look slippery. My run went ok, I made one mistake at the top and then entered the rock slab pretty cautiously, just to be on the safe side. It was not too bad and I then let it go a bit more for the final section of the track.

I came down into the finish to take the lead. I then had to sit and wait for the remaining 7 riders to come down. It seemed that I had had a great top section of the course as nobody matched my split time. As Sabrina crossed the line I knew I had won the first world cup of the year. I was so happy and relieved top get a good start to the year and know that my efforts this winter had been worthwhile. Bring on Fort William !!!

The final results were:
1st Tracy Moseley GBR – 2.50
2nd Sabrina Jonnier FRA – 2.52
3rd Emmeline Ragot FRA – 2.53
4th Celine Gros FRA – 2.55
5th Rachel Atherton GBR – 2.55
