Where are you going to ride and train now that you're in Vancouver instead
of Squamish or Whistler:
I prefer to do hot-laps through Park Royal. If you
go earlier it’s easy to avoid hitting the shoppers. There is some good
riding here on the shore, you just have to know where to look. The main
reason I chose Vancouver was for the milder climate, less rain, and the
convenience of being central to many races, and the airport. It’s only
temporary…. Upon retirement I’m moving into the bush somewhere up north
where houses are still priced realistically.
You had a bit of a scare with a minor knee injury that could have ended your
career. Is training any easier now knowing it could have been over:
Ya, it
certainly makes you appreciate your health. I wasn’t too stressed about my
career in comparison to the fact that knee’s are for life, not only biking.
I could live without bikes… I think, but without good knees, that would be
tough! So I’m looking after them as best I can.
Test of Metal is a classic race in Canada and your hometown. You've won a
couple of times now. What's your favorite thing about that event:
It’s not
the most prestigious race I have ever won but having grown up in Squamish
and always aspired to win the Test… I guess it’s kind of a sentimental
thing. Not to mention the best venue, course, and cycling event I have ever
been a part of.
You love to race bikes no matter what kind but is there a discipline you
could call your favorite:
A Road stage race with big climbs. I have never
done a multi-day mountain bike race but I have a feeling when I do it will
instantly become the new fave. I like the dynamics of multi day racing. In
terms of single day events, I like BIG point-to-point races. Test of metal,
GearJammer, Cheakamus Challenge. I race a lot of standard Olympic format XC
events, 2 hours, and multiple laps. Fun, not favourite, but it pays the
bills.
Can you call out a single career highlight and why:
Against recommendations
of my parents I set out to finish the EPIC test of metal at age 12. I did so
in 4:59:58. This was an amazing experience and I understand why so many
people are thrilled just to finish! Winning the race in 2006 was a goal
seven years in the making and was without doubt the most meaningful win of
my life. The test is where it all started for me; I have a moral obligation
to that race. Instead of Sunday school I attend the T.O.M.
What's it mean to you to be riding for the Kona:
THE KONA, sounds like an
action thriller. I feel pretty honoured to have been picked up by directors
of THE KONA. It’s a great group to be involved with. The athletes are
great people and it’s nothing but fun at the races. And when I head south
to rob the factory outlet of the year’s goodies they even serve a delicious
brunch! As if taking half the bikes there wasn’t enough! So ‘pop-some-corn’,
grab a blanket, and get ready to be blown away by the most anticipated
release of the year… THE KONA.
Do you know what an 8-Track Tape is? If you do and actually owned any what got
the most play time:
Must have to do with music…? We used to have a record
player.
What was that crazy truck you drove to Kona USA? Do you still have it:
Ah, the Mitsubishi Delica. Perhaps the most finely crafted vehicle of all
time. 4x4 diesel shaggin wagon… I was a little hard on it and when I moved
to the city I upgraded to a 50cc Yamaha scooter.
Has anyone ever made you pee your pants laughing:
I have proudly NEVER pee’d my
pants laughing. We made my sister pee her pants laughing once. But then
she started crying and it wasn’t funny anymore.
What's your favorite number and why:
It would probably be a phone number.
But thanks to cell phones I don’t actually know anyone’s phone number.
Are you still working on your helmet strap tan lines:
Ya. In Canada it’s
important to get really focused through the winter months. If you want to
maintain a good set of helmet strap tan lines you have to really utilize the
available opportunities to the fullest. It’s a work in progress but they
seem to peak mid august.
Last Words:
Big enough to burn diesel. |
