Clump team manager and dirt jump icon John Cowan has been riding with Kona
since 2000. He’s a straight-up legend, and an extremely important part of our
freeride program here at Kona. A super talented rider known for pioneering
moto-sized dirt jumps, Cowan’s also a mean course builder and ambassador to
both Kona and the sport. Cowan also rides a new signature bike for 08.

I rode 20” as a kid and then took a 10 year break, a guy I worked with named Crazy Mark got me back into bikes riding MTBs
.

How long have you been riding (all together, 20", and 26"):
Well with the break like 3 years and then 10 more so 13, my lucky number!

Favorite kind of riding:
I like riding every thing, DJ is where I come from but I like it all, pretty much anything at Whistler is for me.

My favorite trails are (were) my yard and Whistler.

Maybe Japan, but it is hard to say, traveling is always rad.

One place you would like to travel to, and why:
Antartica, because If I go there I have been on every continent and I have always wanted to go to Russia, that whole cold war curiosity.

One thing some people might not know about you:
I have done a lot of different things in my life, like traveling, working corporate jobs. Ski patrolling, was in a few bands, shaped surf boards. I guess I get bored easily.

Do you have any other hobbies besides riding bikes:
Surfing, building stuff and riding 110s

What kind of music do you like:
I listen to all types of music.

Who are some of your favorite group:
I don’t like to say, since they wouldn’t license music for my segment.

What kind of movies do you like:
Comedies and something that makes my think about things in a diffirent way, not mental masturbation, just ones that make me leave the theater and think "hmm I never thought about that like that before.."

What is your biggest accomplishment from riding bikes:
Being a pro DJ/freerider when the industry was not quite ready.

I wake up to my daughter wanting some breakfast around 6:15 I try to go back to bed for an hour or so, check my mails/ get a coffee try to get something done and then ride in the afternoon. Well I always worked for my Dad but my first job where I actually got paid was operating equipment. The summer between 7-8th grade.

Worst job you've ever had:
I used to hate operating equipment.

If you won the lottery what are the first few things you'd buy or where would you go to spend it:
The first thing I would do is get something nice for my wife would puts up with a lot of shit, then I would spend the rest to put on the best slope style comp ever.. no corporate BS just all action all for the fans and riders. I would not let anyone sponsor it (exept Kona) and I wouldn’t even put my name on it. I would call it the “its about them not you slope style” then if I had any money left, I would pay a computer guy to block its name from the internet so no one could blog about it, because bloggers are included in the ‘”You”..
